Second Annual CommUNITY Picnic Delights Eagle Fans and Families

October 20, 2023

On Friday night, ESD hosted the second annual CommUNITY Picnic in conjunction with this year's Homecoming game celebration. Nearly 1,500 Eagles gathered in Stoffel Commons for the inclusive celebration that brought our community together under a global theme.

Hosted by the ESDPA and our Classic and Modern Languages Department, families and community members enjoyed cultural activities, decorations, food, and worldwide takeaways. Parent leaders created passports to visit the various countries represented, and each booth had an interactive cultural component. Activities included a bookmark station where kids could have their names written in Arabic, African drummers that taught kids how to play, henna artists that decorated hands, and so much more. Countries, communities, and cultures on the itinerary were African Diaspora, China, Columbia, India, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Spain, Tanzania, and Vietnam - each with its own interactive cultural activity and display.

Thank you to co-chairs Chitra Maridi and Evelyn Yu and all parents, Global Competency Council Chair Antonia Moran, SAGE, faculty, and student volunteers for planning such a fun event! Celebrating the diversity and beauty of our community with an event that incorporated students, parents, alums, faculty, staff, and friends as part of our Homecoming Week festivities was extraordinary.
