Journalism at Its Finest (and Greatest)

November 12, 2024

News feeds, news stories, newspapers… news, news, news. While sorting through all this “news,” don’t miss these news awards that our Eagles brought home! Among our journalism program, The Eagle Edition student staff received an NSPA Pacemaker Award on November 9 at the NSPA conference in Philadelphia for their work during the 2023-2024 school year.

The National Pacemaker Awards, given annually since 1927 by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA), parallel the Pulitzer Prizes for student journalism. These awards are considered the highest national honor in the field and recognize excellence in American student journalism. Professionals judge categories for Broadcast, Innovation, Literary Magazine, Online, Newspaper/Newsmagazine, Specialty Magazine, and Yearbook for coverage, content, quality of writing, quality of reporting, leadership, design, photography, and graphics.

Five of our very own Eagles traveled to the NSPA Fall Conference in Philadelphia, where the following students were awarded with distinguishable honors:

  • 1st Place Illustration: Charlotte Traylor ‘25; Charlie Massoud ‘24
  • 2nd Place Newspaper Front Page: Charlotte Traylor ‘25; Abby Baughman ‘24; Easterly Yeaman ‘24
  • 2nd Place Newspaper Page: Emma Allen ‘26; Ethan Pham ‘25
  • Honorable Mention - Newspaper Page: Iris Hernandez ‘24; Lauren Shushi ‘25
  • Honorable Mention - Designer of the Year: Sophia Sardiña ‘25
  • 4th Place Literary Arts Magazine Spread: Sofia Mercado ‘25

The 2024 yearbook and literary arts magazine Pacemaker finalists will be announced in the spring, and winners will be announced at the NSPA Spring Conference in April.

These Eagles are producing journalism at its finest, or should we say, greatest!
